A case study in the journal Deutsche Zeitschrift fur Akupunktur (German Journal of Acupuncture) highlighted the efficacy of herbal treatments used in Kampo medicine for managing bronchitis symptoms. The report was authored by H. Reissenweber-Hewel of the International Society for Japanese Kampo Medicine.

  • Kampo medicine, commonly practiced in Japan, offers herbal therapy for treating acute and chronic bronchitis. The report noted that these treatments are both attractive and practical.
  • In particular, the report highlighted three herbal treatments:
    • Bakumondoto, which is commonly used to treat dry cough, as well as coughing caused by bronchial hyperreagibility
    • Seihaito, an herbal treatment for irritated bronchial mucosa and excessive phlegm
    • Saibokuto, which is used for bronchial asthma, cough and mental strain, and the corresponding abdominal findings

In conclusion, the study identified the herbal treatments to be effective in treating bronchitis, especially when used holistically.
