Yellow oleander reduces weight gain

Researchers in Argentina and Mexico found that the seeds of yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana) could help reduce weight. This finding, which was published in the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, suggests that yellow oleander could be considered as a potential option to fight obesity.

  • Obesity is a worldwide epidemic and drugs available to treat it come with side effects.
  • In the study, the researchers looked at the effect of the different extracts of yellow oleander on monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced obesity in mice.
  • They used yellow oleander for the study because the plant’s seeds have been widely used in Mexican traditional medicine for reducing weight.
  • The researchers first induced obesity in mice by administering MSG.
  • After the mice became obese, they orally gave mice the different yellow oleander extracts for seven weeks.
  • They also conducted a chemical analysis to identify the chemical compounds in yellow oleander extracts.
  • The researchers found that the oral administration of the hexanic extract of yellow oleander reduced weight gain by up to 24.1 percent.
  • In addition, this extract exhibited a good response to the glucose tolerance test, prevented the development of insulin resistance, and significantly increased serum adiponectin levels.
  • Eight low-polarity compounds were identified in the active fraction.

In conclusion, the findings of the study suggest that yellow oleander could help reduce weight gain without causing insulin resistance.
